Featherstone Garden is Moving
Happy Spring, Featherstone Friends!
We have some big news to share. Our time at 600 Plum Street (Downtown) is coming to an early end. The University of Michigan has purchased the site to use as a parking lot for its new Detroit Center for Innovation, and our lease was unexpectedly terminated a year ahead of schedule. While we had hoped for more time, we’re now focused on the next chapter—growing deeper roots in Morningside.
Since 2020, we’ve been operating a small farm on 3 lots in the lovely MorningSide neighborhood. By utilizing soil, and raised beds that we are relocating from the downtown site, we plan to transform 3 more lots into beautiful and productive community gardens.

A recent Ask This Old House episode featured Aaron Smith, founder of Motor City Grounds Crew and co-founder of Featherstone Garden, showcasing his work revitalizing Detroit’s urban spaces. Aaron also runs the E. Warren Tool Library and collaborates on Fight the Blight, an initiative restoring neglected properties while providing trade skills to formerly incarcerated individuals. His efforts highlight the power of skilled trades in community transformation.

Rooted in Detroit, Featherstone Garden is a femme, minority, and veteran led social enterprise that is dedicated to land stewardship and growing produce year-round for neighbors and local restaurants. As an all-natural operation, the garden intercrops veggies, herbs, fungi, and flowers that complement each other as companions, nurture soil and beneficial insects, and contribute to a healthy urban ecosystem. At both their Downtown and MorningSide locations, Featherstone offers space for the community to enjoy the healing benefits of gardening and consuming plant and fungi-forward foods.
