Motor City Grounds Crew x Featherstone Garden
One of the most important community partners that helps support our operations at the garden is Motor City Grounds Crew— a nonprofit whose aim is to strengthen Detroit neighborhoods by leading green space beautification, hosting youth sports activities, and managing the East Warren Tool Library.
Recently, MCGC received a grant to fund a new community flower garden that lives just behind our greenhouse and outdoor garden. Beginning in mid-August, we will be offering donation-based ‘u-pick flower bouquets’ during farmstand hours (Wednesdays 12-5pm). You will have the option to purchase one of our up-cycled vases or mason jars that we have available on site, or bring your own vase to fill. Be sure to keep your eyes on our latest newsletters and instagram posts (@featherstone.garden) to stay in the loop.

Miso Sesame Turmeric Granola
By Renee S.
To preface— this granola recipe can be modified with whatever pantry staples you keep in the house. There are countless ways to approach granola, let me tell ya(!!), and in my opinion, the recipe I’m sharing below is a nice balance of sweet and savory. If you prefer a granola that’s on the sweeter side, I suggest adding 2 tablespoons of brown sugar into the mix. Allow your taste buds to be your guide by tasting and making substitutions along the way.
To give you a rough break down: I’m using 3 cups of oats, 2 cups of nuts & seeds (1 1/2 c. nuts, 1/2 c. seeds), 1 cup of dried fruit & chocolate, a few teaspoons of my favorite spices, 1/4 cup apple juice, 1/4 cup sweetener (any combination of maple syrup, honey, date syrup, etc., works. I will be using 3 tablespoons maple syrup & 1 tablespoon date syrup. Note: 4 tablespoons = 1/4 cup), a few tablespoons of oil (coconut & sesame), white miso for that savory umami flavor, and touch of vanilla extract.
Yields: roughly 6 cups of granola
Ingredients |
3 cups old fashion oats
1 cup raw cashews
1/2 cup almonds
3 tablespoons black sesame seeds
3 tablespoons pumpkin seeds
2 tablespoons flax seed
2 teaspoons ground turmeric
1 teaspoons cinnamon
1/2 teaspoons all spice
1/2 teaspoons cardamom
1/4 teaspoons cracked black pepper
1/4 teaspoons course ground sea salt
1/4 cup apple juice
3 tablespoons grade A maple syrup
2 tablespoons melted coconut oil
1 tablespoons date syrup
3 teaspoons miso paste (white)
1 teaspoons sesame oil
1 teaspoons vanilla extract
Additions after baking:
3/4 cup dried fruit (I’m using dried cherries and mulberries)
1/4 cup chocolate chunks or chips
